Belarus explains reasons for Uralkali chief's arrest to Russian ambassador

MINSK. Aug 27 (Interfax) - The Belarusian Prosecutor General's Office has explained to the Russian ambassador to Minsk why Uralkali General Director Vladislav Baumgertner was detained and arrested and promised to consider the ambassador's request for his release in accordance with the law.

"Acting Belarusian Prosecutor General Nikolai Kuklis explained the reasons for opening a criminal case against Baumgertner and his detention to the Russian Ambassador to Belarus Alexander Surikov and said also that the Prosecutor General's Office will consider the Russian ambassador's request in due course of law," the Belarusian Prosecutor General's Office told Interfax on Tuesday.

Surikov "expressed his doubt about the legality of Russian citizen Vladislav Baumgertner's detention and requested that he be released from custody or his restrictive measure amended," it said.

"The Russian Embassy to Belarus will be notified about the results of the request's consideration," it said.
