Kyrgyz police on alert ahead of Independence Day
BISHKEK. Aug 30 (Interfax) - Police will remain on alert in Kyrgyzstan on August 29 and 30 ahead of Independence Day, an Interior Ministry spokesman told Interfax.
This measure is intended to maintain law and order on August 31 when Independence Day will be celebrated in Kyrgyzstan, he said.
"The situation is stable and under control and the police have ample capabilities to prevent destabilization," he also said.
The main events will unfold in Bishkek and Osh, the principal cities in northern and southern Kyrgyzstan, where all of the busiest public venues are monitored. Traffic patrols have been reinforced and special operations are carried out to enforce law and order, the spokesman said.
Bishkek officials told Interfax on Friday that the 22nd anniversary of Kyrgyzstan's independence will pass without the traditional festive performance on the central square that is usually attended by top officials, or any other special events in different parts of the city.
