Bear killed entering homestead in Yakutian village

YAKUTSK. Sept 2 (Interfax) - Bears are attacking homesteads in the Srednekolymsk district of Yakutia.

Head of the hunting department of Yakutia Nikolai Smetanin told Interfax on Monday that a bear roamed into a homestead in the village of Alekyu-Kyuel in the Srednekolymsky district on Saturday while the family was celebrating a child's birthday. One of the women noticed the beast, which was shot dead the same day.

"Three bears have been killed in different villages in the district during the past month. More often the animals wander to the roads where cafes stand," the official said.

Earlier reports said that the bear population of Yakutia would be reduced following a growing number of attacks on humans resulting from a poor berry harvest in the woods due to heavy rainfall.

Previously a bear came into the yard of a private home in the Srednekolymsky district on the night of August 26. Earlier in the day one more bear was noticed in the town of Srednekolymsk.

On August 21 a bear entered a house on the outskirts of Srednekolymsk and on August 17 tried to enter the office of a road repair company.

Law enforcement officers are patrolling the outskirts of the town in the evenings and at night.
