Final decision on putting Syrian chemical arms under intl control to be made within 7-10 days - Duma deputy
MOSCOW. Sept 10 (Interfax) - A decision on whether the chemical weapons possessed by Syria can be put under the international community's control will be made within 7-10 days, Russian State Duma international affairs committee head Alexei Pushkov said.
"I believe a decision on the matter in principle should be made within the next 7-10 days," Pushkov told journalists on Tuesday.
When such a decision is made, the prewar tension will start relieving, and "then conditions will appear for a transition toward a political-diplomatic process," he said.
This week will be decisive for settling the issue, he said.
"I think this issue will be resolved fundamentally either by the end of this week or by the beginning of next, regarding the Syrian government's final reply and the American side's response to this," he said.
Russia believes it is most likely that the Syrian government will support Russia's proposal on placing the Syrian chemical arsenals under the international community's control, he said.
