Russia to turn over Bushehr NPP to Iran on Sept 24 - Kremlin aide

MOSCOW. Sept 12 (Interfax) - Russia will turn the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 over to Iran for operation on September 24, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said.

Speaking at a news conference in Moscow on Thursday, Ushakov said Russian President Vladimir Putin and new Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will discuss cooperation in the civilian nuclear generation sector at their first meeting on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek on Friday.

"The presidents will touch upon problems of cooperation in the civilian nuclear generation sector. It is being maintained in compliance with all restrictions sanctioned by the UN Security Council in relation to the Iranian nuclear program," he said.

The matter will be discussed in the run-up to Unit 1's planned transfer to Iran on September 24, he said.

Ushakov refrained from answering a question from Interfax as to whether Russia has made a decision on building Unit 2 of the Bushehr NPP, saying only that the two presidents "intend to discuss the broadest spectrum of aspects of bilateral relations, including trade-economic ones."
