Russia might sign contract on design of nuclear plant in Bangladesh by year's end
LONDON. Sept 13 (Interfax) - A contract to develop the design and licensing documentation for the Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant in Bangladesh might be signed by the end of 2013, a representative of one of the Russian participants in the project told Interfax on the sidelines of the World Nuclear Association (WNA) conference.
The site has already been selected and survey work is underway to assess the environmental impact, he said.
It was reported earlier that the feasibility study and required environmental impact study for the NPP are supposed to be completed by 2015. The documentation is being developed by OJSC NIAEP, the management company for Russia's general contract for construction of nuclear power plants abroad, Atomstroyexport (ASE). The relevant contract was signed in June.
Russia and Bangladesh signed an intergovernmental agreement in November 2011 to cooperate on the construction of the first NPP in Bangladesh. It calls for the design, construction and launch of two generating units with VVER reactors with capacity of 1,000 MW each at a site in Ruppur, 200 km from Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, as well as construction of infrastructure.
