Rouhani backs Russia's initiative on Syria

BISHKEK. Sept 13 (Interfax) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani praised the statement made by Syria on joining the Chemical Weapons Convention and backed Russia's initiatives in this sphere.

"Being the largest victim of the use of chemical weapons, Iran is against the production, storage, and use of such weapons and supports the disposal of all types of weapons of mass destruction," Rouhani said at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Bishkek.

For this reason, "we consider Russia's initiative and the statement made by Syria on joining the Chemical Weapons Convention a good start for achieving this goal," he said.
