Doku Umarov mastermind of deadly bombing in Chechnya - FSB official
GROZNY, Russia. Sept 16 (Interfax) - Doku Umarov masterminded a suicide bombing in Chechnya's Sunzha district on Monday that left three policemen dead and four others injured, the head of the Chechen branch of the Federal Security Service (FSB) has claimed.
"The leadership of the bandit underground as represented by Doku Umarov is behind all this," Andrei Seryozhnikov, said during a meeting with Chechnya's head of administration, Ramzan Kadyrov.
Police tried to stop what they thought was a suspicious-looking car from driving onto the premises of the Sunzha district police authority in the village of Sernovodsk. They tried to bar the vehicle's way, but those inside set off a bomb the car was carrying.
In a similar incident near the village of Nesterovskaya in Sunzha district in the neighboring Russian region of Ingushetia, a bomb inside a car went off as police tried to stop the vehicle, which had a suspected militant inside. One of the policemen was fatally injured and died in the hospital.
"To completely liquidate the gang that operates on territory in Ingushetia that borders the Chechen Republic, close interaction is needed between law enforcement services in the two constituent units of the [Russian] Federation," Kadyrov said.
He said that two weeks ago there were reports that a certain group of militants based in Ingushetia was plotting an attack on the police chief of Chechnya's Sunzha district.
"However, late at night a car with explosives and a suicide attacker inside was able to pass through a federal checkpoint. By the way, the bandits got hold of that car through an armed assault. What kind of checking does a checkpoint do if bandits can safely pass through it? This matter needs investigating," Kadyrov said.
He ordered conferring official honors on the police who were killed and injured in Monday's attack and giving financial support to the families of those killed and to those injured.
