Kyrgyz opposition will continue seeking money and power - President Atambayev
BRUSSELS. Sept 19 (Interfax) - Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev has said he does not rule out the possibility that the opposition will make further attempts to destabilize the country.
"More attempts will be made to knock the situation off balance," he told Interfax.
"There will soon be further attempts linked with Kumtor [Kyrgyzstan's largest gold mine operated by foreign investors] because these individuals [the opposition] neither care about Kumtor nor do the care about the environment," the president said.
"Some of these people need money, others need power, but not Kumtor and the environment," he said.
"Every time they will look for a pretext, not even valid reasons, to justify stirring up the situation, and they will continue to try to do so," Atambayev said.
"But the authorities grow stronger every day, and people are beginning to trust them," he said.
"No one will be able to escape punishment, and if anyone breaks the law, he will be held to account for his actions in accordance with the law," the president said.
