Russia asks N. Korea to explain incident with Russian ship in Sea of Japan

MOSCOW. Sept 21 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry is asking North Korea to explain the incident that occurred in the Sea of Japan on Friday, when the North Korean coastal guard stopped the Russian fishing vessel Altai.

"According to the information we have, a North Korean military ship, without making any contact, fired shots with automatic weapons and red signal rockets in the direction of the Russian vessel, after which it heaved aback. The North Korean military boarded the vessel, inspected the ship and questioned the captain. After that, the vessel was allowed to continue its voyage. No people aboard the ship were hurt, The vessel was not damaged," the Russian Foreign Ministry's press and information department said in a commentary posted on its website on Saturday.

"The Russian Foreign Ministry has asked the Koreans to explain this incident," the ministry said.
