Russian consumer watchdog to visit Moldova to review wine quality control

MOSCOW. Sept 30 (Interfax) - Experts from Russian consumer watchdog Rospotrebnadzor may visit Moldova in the near future to look at the country's quality control system for wine, which is currently banned from Russia.

"Our specialists will probably visit Moldova soon and look at the situation on site. This may happen as early as next week. They will look at the control system, the work of Moldova's National Alcoholic Production Quality Test Center," Gennady Onischenko, Russia's chief sanitary doctor and the head of Rospotrebnadzor, told Interfax.

There was a delegation of Moldovan experts in Moscow on Friday, he said, adding that the results of the visit were positive.

"The very fact of their visit moved the situation forward," he said.

"Measures undertaken by Moldova to ensure the quality of wine production were discussed. A decision was made to continue working towards harmonizing requirements on quality and safety, regulations for laboratory controls and procedures for carrying out checks. We agreed to exchange information," he said.

"And our inspection will provide a foundation for moving forward. So far everything is moving within the agreements that were reached. Let's see," he said on the outlook for the return of Moldovan wine to the Russian market.
