Syrian chemical weapons destruction requires substantial antiterrorist measures - Russian expert

ST. PETERSBURG. Oct 4 (Interfax-AVN) - The destruction of chemical weapons in Syria or their transportation for this purpose to other countries should proceed under the international community's control and should be reliably protected from possible terrorist attacks, Col. Gen. Anatoly Zaitsev (ret.), a former Russian Defense Ministry chief advisor in the Syrian armed forces, told Interfax-AVN on Friday.

"There are various technological approaches toward the destruction of chemical warfare agents minimizing the danger to the population and the environment. But this is not enough. Bearing in mind the ongoing armed hostilities on Syrian territory, it is important to ensure reliable protection of the sites by military units and modern antiterrorist technical methods to rule out unsanctioned entry and attacks on chemical arsenals and sites for destroying chemical warfare agents," Zaitsev said.
