Inter RAO might resume electricity exports to Turkey
MOSCOW. Oct 7 (Interfax) - OJSC Inter RAO UES is holding negotiations to resume electricity exports from Georgia to Turkey along the 400-kV Akhaltsikhe (Georgia) - Borcha (Turkey) power line that is supposed to be put into operation soon.
"After the signing of a number of contracts between Georgia and Turkey, we will work out a supply plan, after which we intend to begin exports," a spokesman for the Russian company told Interfax.
He did not specify the amount of electricity that will be exported or exactly when exports will begin.
In September 2013, Inter RAO sold its subsidiary TGR Enerji, which exported electricity from Georgia to Turkey in 2011. The company exported about 12 million kWh per month with maximum capacity of up to 30 MW. Electricity was exported from Russia through Georgia via the Batumi-Hopa line when it was not used to import electricity from Turkey into Georgia. However, exports were later deemed economically ineffective.
"Right now there are no exports, this company was sold," the Inter RAO spokesman said, without naming the buyer.
Inter RAO, through subsidiary Silk Road Holdings B.V. (Netherlands), owns 75.11% of Telasi, one of the largest power grid companies in Georgia. The firm distributes and sells electricity in Tbilisi and its suburbs, supplying up to 2 billion kWh of power to over 454,000 customers per year.
Inter RAO is the only Russian operator for electricity exports and imports.
