Putin: Syria actively engaged in chemical arms scrapping, important not to lose pace

BALI, Indonesia. Oct 8 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin hopes that the process of elimination of Syrian chemical weapons will not lose pace.

"We have agreed with our U.S. partners on what we should do [to resolve the Syrian situation] and how to do so in the medium-term. Doubts about the appropriate reaction of the Syrian authorities to the decisions on their chemical weapons proved unfounded. The Syrian administration has energetically involved itself in this work and its actions are exceedingly transparent. Hopefully, the work will continue at the same pace and in the same fashion," Putin told a press conference after the APEC Bali summit.

Russia had "tactical" disagreements over Syria with the United States, the president observed.

"The United States does not want Al-Qaeda to take power in Syria, does it? And we do not want that either. We have common goals with regard to the situation in that country," Putin stressed.
