Lon Snowden not sure his son can ever return to U.S.
MOSCOW. Oct 10 (Interfax) - Lon Snowden, the father of former NSA employee Edward Snowden, whom Moscow has granted asylum, is not sure that his son could ever return to the United States, of which he told journalists at a Moscow airport upon arriving in Russia.
Speaking to journalists, Lon Snowden thanked lawyer Anatoly Kucherena for organizing his visit to Russia. The elder Snowden said that, while he believed in the rights his son is invested with in line with the constitution, he would like Kucherena to represent his son's interests in Russia.
Lon Snowden declined to discuss the legal aspects of his son's situation, saying that he trusts Kucherena in this respect, but reiterated that he wants his son to be safe and free.
Kucherena, who was meeting Lon Snowden at the airport, apologized to journalists for brief answers.
"I am asking you to understand one thing: Mr. Snowden has just arrived, and this is the first time he is in Russia. We need to leave now - after all, he's just off the plane. He needs to rest for some time, and then we will make our plans. I think we will hold a press conference some time later," Kucherena said.
He made it understood that he would try to arrange for such a press conference on Thursday.
