Brahimi to visit Middle East - UN official

MOSCOW. Oct 16 (Interfax) - UN and Arab League special envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, is due to visit the Middle East after Eid al-Adha, a current Muslim holiday, a senior UN official told reporters in Moscow on Wednesday.

Asked about the future of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the official said that was not the main problem, and that the Syrian government and opposition would be able to deal with the matter by themselves if they came to an agreement to set up a transitional authority.

The official argued that neither the government nor the opposition would be able to win in the current conflict and that a political settlement is the only possible solution.
