Osh remains springboard for extremism - special service

OSH. Oct 21 (Interfax) - International terrorist, religious and extremist organizations are actively recruiting new members in Osh, the southern capital of Kyrgyzstan, Arziyev Nurkamil, deputy chairman of the Kyrgyz State National Security Committee for Osh and the Osh region, said on Monday.

"The territory of Osh remains a springboard for the recruitment of members of international terrorist organizations," he said at a meeting of the coordination council on security issues.

Nurkamil also said four members of international terrorist organizations who fought in Syria on the side of the rebels were detained in Osh and the Osh region in August 2013.

"The purpose of their arrival in Kyrgyzstan was the organization of subversive activities to destabilize the socio-political situation," he said.

Osh Mayor Melisbek Myrzakmatov said at the meeting that "grassroots conflicts between city residents often develop into ethnic conflicts if no attention is given to them."

For this reason, the mayor demanded that defense and law enforcement agencies intensify their ongoing work with the population and the work on locating saboteurs who plan to organize riots in Osh.
