Russian cruiser Pyotr Veliky en route to northeastern Atlantic

SEVEROMORSK. Oct 22 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Northern Fleet's flagship, the heavy nuclear-powered missile carrying cruiser Pyotr Veliky, has sailed out of its base in Severomorsk in the Barents Sea and is currently heading to the northeastern part of the Atlantic, the fleet's spokesman Captain 1st Rank Vadim Serga told Interfax-AVN on Tuesday.

"The cruiser's crew, under the commander of Captain 1st Rank Vladislav Malakhovsky, will conduct a long-distance deployment and tackle a number of combat training tasks in the Atlantic and other areas of the world's oceans," Serga said.

The cruiser's deployment, which will last several months, comes as part of the Russian Maritime Doctrine, which demands Russian naval ships' presence in strategically important maritime areas around the world, he said.
