Former policemen from Moscow's Matveyevsky market sentenced to one year in general regime colony

MOSCOW. Oct 22 (Interfax) - Moscow's Nikulinsky Court has sentenced former policemen, found guilty of negligence over the incident in Moscow's Matveyevsky market, to one year in a general regime penal colony.

Vladimir Cherezov and Yury Lunkov have been found guilty of "negligence, which led to recklessness that inflicted serious damage," the Interfax correspondent reported.

During deliberations the prosecutor's office has asked that Cherezov and Lunkov be sentenced to three years in a general regime colony and that they be banned from taking state positions for three years.

On July 27 a police officer was severely beaten at the Matveyevsky market, where several dozen natives of the southern regions of Russia tried to prevent police from detaining a man suspected of raping a 15-year-old girl. Dagestani couple Magomed and Khalimat Rasulov, accused of making an attempt on the policeman's life, have been arrested.

Investigators believe that Cherezov and Lunkov allowed Rasulov to beat the policeman and then attempted to flee the scene without any obstacles by not fulfilling their duties.
