Russian govt endorses unified air defense shield agreement with Kazakhstan

MOSCOW. Oct 29 (Interfax) - A Russian-Kazakh agreement to build a unified regional air defense shield of the two countries will be forwarded by the Russian government to President Vladimir Putin, who will have to submit it to the State Duma, the lower chamber of Russia's parliament, for ratification.

The document, which was signed by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Kazakh counterpart Adilbek Dzhaksybekov in the Kazakh capital of Astana on January 30, 2013, offers an international legal framework for the future Russian-Kazakh system as an element of the CIS member states' unified air defense shield.

This measure will allow both Russia and Kazakhstan to automatically receive data detailing the situation in the airspace over Kazakhstan and its neighbors.

In accordance with the agreement, the sides will also share classified information on air defense issues.

Shoigu said at the signing ceremony in January that "this air defense agreement contains new components, including those dealing with missile defense."
