Suspected owner of suicide belt detained in southern Russia - Interior Ministry

STAVROPOL. Nov 1 (Interfax) - A suicide bomber vest filled with powerful explosives has been found in an abandoned building on the outskirts of Russia's southern city of Stavropol, a regional police spokesman told Interfax.

"We can already confirm earlier reports that a suspected owner of this suicide belt was detained. Further details will be provided later," he said.

A source in the Stavropol Territory's law enforcement agencies, for his part, told Interfax that the explosive device contained the equivalent of around two kilograms of TNT.

"A suicide bomber vest filled with explosives equivalent presumably to some two kilograms of TNT and equipped with an electric detonator was found in an abandoned privately owned house," the source said.

The bomb's possible owner, a resident of Stavropol, was detained, he said.

Police do not rule out that the explosive device might have been made as part of a plot to stage a terrorist attack.
