Rabbi from Dagestan conducts prayer at congress of Hasidic Jews in New York
MOSCOW. Nov 3 (Interfax) - Ovadya Isakov, the rabbi of the city of Derbent in Dagestan, who survived an assassination attempt in July 2013, became a guest of honor at a congress of the Orthodox Jewish movement, Chabad-Lubavitch, held in New York, the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia told Interfax.
The organizers of the forum asked Isakov to conduct a prayer before the culminating point of the congress - the banquet - in recognition of his courage.
The forum was attended by more than 4,500 Hasidic Jews from around the world.
Reports said earlier that an unidentified assailant fired a shot at the rabbi on July 25 after he got out of his car and walked to his apartment building.
The rabbi suffered a penetrating wound of the chest and was hospitalized in serious condition.
The assailant fled.
Isakov later underwent a course of rehabilitation treatment in Israel with the Federation of Jewish Communities f Russia's sponsorship.
