Tajik govt to resign en masse when president re-inaugurated

DUSHANBE. Nov 8 (Interfax) - Tajikistan's government announced on Friday that it would resign en masse after the re-inauguration on November 16 of incumbent President Emomali Rahmon, who, according to official reports, won another presidential election on Wednesday after holding the country's top office for 21 years.

Under the law, the government must resign after the president-elect is sworn in.

The current ministers will stay in office until the next government is appointed, the government said in a statement.

On Thursday, the Central Election Commission said Rahmon had received 83.6% of votes in the election and that the poll had shown a turnout of 86.6%.

Under the Tajik constitution, the president is both head of state and chief executive. The constitution authorizes the president to appoint all the ministers, deputy ministers and other top officials without seeking parliamentary approval.

After the 2006 presidential election, Rahmon reappointed most of the ministers.
