Tensions in Korea should not be used as pretext for deploying global missile defense system - Lavrov
DELHI. Nov 11 (Interfax) - Russia believes it is unacceptable to use the current situation on the Korean Peninsula as a pretext for deploying additional components of the global missile defense system, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"We are creating conditions for prompt resumption of the six-party negotiations on the settlement of the nuclear problem of the Korean Peninsula. There are no alternatives to these negotiations," Lavrov said at the 11th meeting of the foreign ministers of the ASEM countries (Asia-Europe Meeting) on Monday.
"We believe it is unacceptable to use this situation as a pretext for increasing modern weapons in northeastern Asia, including the deployment of additional components of the global missile defense system," the minister said.
