USC to build technologically advanced ships, avoid competition with Asian shipyards

MOSCOW. Nov 13 (Interfax) - Russia's United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) will avoid almost all competition with shipyards in Asia by producing more technologically advanced ships, Deputy Industry and Trade Minister Alexei Rakhmanov said at briefing on USC's development strategy to 2030, which was approved at the end of October.

"We must revise, move away from the idea that ship construction is merely a form of metal-working. We need to arrive at the process, incorporate the understanding that we will put the accent on engineering, since in both the shipbuilding strategy and from the standpoint of corporate development, we understand that high-tech ships are our product. Suffice it to say that it will be very difficult for us to compete with shipyards in Southeast Asia on the 'standard products' - large ships-product carriers," he said.

USC, the biggest shipbuilding group in Russia, was formed in 2007. It is wholly state owned.
