Yerevan accuses Baku of disrupting Karabakh peace process

YEREVAN. Nov 18 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan keeps breaching the truce in the Karabakh conflict zone, which is harmful for the peace process, Armenian Parliament Vice-Speaker Eduard Sharmazanov said.

"Just a few days before a meeting of the Armenian and Azeri presidents, the Azeri Armed Forces opened fire at Armenian border towns, which violated the terms of the truce and undercut the appeals and efforts of the cochairmen of the OSCE Minsk Group on Karabakh," Sharmazanov said in a statement released on Monday

Azeri soldiers opened fire at civilian vehicles near the village of Vazashen in the Tavush district of northeastern Armenia on November 16.

There were no casualties, the Armenian Defense Ministry press service told Interfax. "Pursuant to the order of Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian, the Armenian Armed Forces did not return fire," it said.

"This incident is another piece of evidence illustrating Azerbaijan's disruption of the Karabakh peace process. The behavior of Azerbaijan, which disturbs regional peace and stability, should be strongly condemned by the OSCE Minsk Group cochairmen and the international community as a whole," the Armenian Parliament Vice-Speaker said.

The OSCE Minsk Group cochairmen said after they had visited the region on November 4-5 that Armenian President Serzh Sargsian and Azeri President Ilham Aliyev had agreed to meet in November and continue Karabakh settlement negotiations.

The presidents reaffirmed their intention to meet in November 2013 for updating their positions on the peace process and discussing ways of making further progress, the mediators said in a statement.
