Ashton supports Russian, U.S. efforts to convene Geneva II
BRUSSELS. Nov 18 (Interfax) - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton has lauded the efforts of Russia and the United States to convene Geneva II and expressed hope that the international peace conference for Syria would take place at some point.
The EU foreign policy chief said at the Monday meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council they needed a peace process, which could help the long-suffering people of Syria, especially ahead of the approaching winter season. In her opinion, the Syrians should see that there is a peaceful way to solve their problems. Ashton added that she highly valued the efforts of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who were fostering the Syrian peace process.
Ashton expressed concern about the growing number of internally displaced persons and refugees seeking shelter in countries bordering on Syria and in other regions.
