Issue of Baumgertner's extradition to Russia to be resolved soon - Belarusian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. Nov 19 (Interfax) - The procedure of extraditing Russian potash miner Uralkali CEO Vladislav Baumgertner from Belarus to Russia is being carried out and the issue will be resolved soon, Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei said.

"Relevant interstate procedures related to the extradition of this person are being implemented by our law enforcement organizations and our prosecutor general's offices. As to a definite extradition date, I cannot tell you, but as far as I know, all necessary procedures have been completed and little is left to be done now," Makei said at a news conference in Moscow when asked a relevant question by Interfax.

"I am convinced that this issue will be completely resolved soon, namely in the legal field," Makei said.

According to Makei, the sides have agreed during the latest meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that such private issues should not impact the cooperation between the two countries.

Baumgertner was detained in Minsk on August 26 and a criminal case was opened regarding his case. The extradition of Baumgertner to Russia is possible, Belarusian prosecutor Alexander Konyuk said on November 14.
