St. Petersburg signs deal with Transstroy for Zenit-Arena Stadium
ST. PETERSBURG. Nov 21 (Interfax) - The St. Petersburg construction committee has signed a contract with CJSC Engineering Corporation Transstroy, part of the Transstroy Corporation, for it to correct project documentation and build the Zenit-Arena Stadium on Krestovsky Island, the committee reported.
Earlier Engineering Corporation Transstroy was declared the winner of a public tender for the work. The contract is worth 12.54 billion rubles.
All capital construction works are to be completed by the end of 2015 and the stadium should be ready to open in June 2016.
St. Petersburg Deputy Governor Marat Oganesyan said the stadium on Krestovsky Island would cost Zenit Football Club 34.9 billion rubles.
Construction of the new stadium for Zenit began in 2007. Because of Russia's application to host the 2018 World Cup, the stadium project was sent for reworking after construction begun so that it could comply completely with FIFA capacity and safety requirements
In the fall of 2012, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev criticized the slowness of the project and asked the city authorities and other parties involved to determine a financing scheme for the project. He indicated that the federal government was not willing to provide assistance without good reason.
Transstroy, part of Oleg Deripaska's Basic Element holding company, is one of Russia's biggest construction holdings, specializing on building transport infrastructure in Russia and abroad.
