Russian envoy sees prospect of free trade zone between Eurasian Union and EU

BRUSSELS. Nov 22 (Interfax) - Provisions for a free trade zone between Russia and the European Union were made by the sides' Partnership and Cooperation Agreement dating back to 1994, but today it is possible to discuss a potential free trade zone between the Eurasian Economic Union and the EU, Russia's envoy to the EU Vladimir Chizhov told Interfax in Brussels on Thursday.

"Today it is certainly possible to discuss the creation of a free trade zone between the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union. The Eurasian Economic Union is due to appear by the beginning of 2015. Obviously, there will be a need to speak about a free trade zone in this format," he said.

Eurasian Economic Commission experts will soon join talks on a new partnership agreement between Russia and the EU in order to discuss the aspects of the future document that will regulate the commission's supranational functions, he said.

"But Russia and the European Union will certainly remain the parties to these agreement," Chizhov said.
