Russia to increase poultry meat output 6% in 2013 - AgMin

MOSCOW. Nov 25 (Interfax) - Russia will end this year having increased the production of poultry meat 6% to 4.9 million tonnes, the Agriculture Ministry predicts.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, poultry meat production has more than doubled over the past six years, or by 2.2 million live-weight tonnes. That positive trend persists this year. Production of poultry for slaughter amounted to 3.7 million tonnes in January-September, 213,200 tonnes, or 6.1%, more year-on-year.

Production is growing fastest in Belgorod, Leningrad, Voronezh, Rostov, Chelyabinsk, and Novgorod Regions, Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, and Tatarstan, according to the ministry's data.

Russia will supply itself with around 96% of the poultry meat it consumes this year, 11 percentage points higher is than indicated by the food-security doctrine.

The sector's further development will be associated with growing consumption, or the possible export of product, the ministry thinks. The most likely route is increasing domestic consumption. Medical standards state there should be thirty kilograms eaten annually. The figure in Russia is 26 kg.
