Kazakh border guards fire at boats of Russian poachers in Caspian Sea

ASTANA. Nov 26 (Interfax) - A Russian citizen was killed and another one was injured as Kazakh border guards tried to detain poachers in the Caspian Sea.

Kazakh Coast Guard soldiers, who were patrolling the area onboard a helicopter, spotted eight boats that illegally entered Kazakhstan's section of the Caspian Sea, the Kazakh National Security Committee's Border Guard Service said in a press release.

The border trespassers refused to stop and tried to escape, forcing the Kazakh soldiers to open fire at the boats' engines.

"These measures stopped one of the boats, which was carrying four Russian citizens, one whom sustained lethal wounds. The second boat that was stopped was also carrying four citizens of Russia. One of them was slightly injured in the leg," it said.

The injured person was transported to the Border Guard Service's ship Astana, where he was treated by doctors.

The other suspects managed to escape and left Kazakhstan's territorial waters.

Two of those detained were previously convicted of illegally crossing the Kazakh border in the Caspian Sea. They were released from prison just one month ago.
