Russia to commission its last plant for scrapping chemical weapons on Dec 19
IZHEVSK. Nov 28 (Interfax-AVN) - A chemical weapons' disposal plant in Kizner, Udmurtia, will begin operations on December 19, Udmurtia Deputy Minister for Construction, Architecture and Housing Policy Alexander Perunov said on Thursday.
"The first unit of the chemical weapons' disposal plant in the town of Kizner, the Republic of Udmurtia, has been built. Its startup is due on December 19," Perunov said.
A report posted a year ago with the reference to Udmurtia Head Alexander Volkov said the Kizner plant might be launched in late 2013 or early 2014.
The plant is located in the direct proximity to the engineering zone of the military unit 55498, where chemical munitions are stored in ground depots.
The plant is supposed to dispose of 5,743.2 tonnes of warfare agents (sarin, soman, VX and viscose lewisite). More than 2 million chemical munitions will be destroyed.
The Kizner plant is the seventh and last plant built in Russia for the elimination of chemical weapons.
