U.S. ambassador to Ukraine condemns dispersal of opposition demonstration by police
KYIV. Nov 30 (Interfax) - U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt has condemned the use of force against the people who protested at Independence Square in the center of Kyiv against the Ukrainian government's decision not to sign an association agreement with the EU at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius.
"Still working to understand what happened but obviously condemn the violence against peaceful demonstrators. Will have more to say," Pyatt said on Twitter on Saturday.
The signature of an association agreement between Ukraine and the EU was supposed to be the key event during the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius on November 28-29. However, the Ukrainian government announced a week before the summit that it suspended preparations for signing the document, motivating this step by its excessive costs for the national economy. The document was not signed at the summit, which spurred protests across Ukraine, which have been continuing for several days.
