Opposition leader: police may storm Kyiv mayor's office held by demonstrators

KYIV. Dec 2 (Interfax) - The leader of Ukraine's nationalist Svoboda (Freedom) party, warned on Monday that there was evidence that within hours police might storm the building of the Kyiv mayor's office, which had been held by pro-European Union demonstrators since Sunday.

"According to our information, there is a plan to storm the Kyiv city administration today. It's several thousand people," Oleh Tyahnybok told a briefing at the "national resistance headquarters" in Kyiv.

He said the demonstrators who were inside the mayor's office were peaceful civilians who had exercised their right to be in a building belonging to the Kyiv community. He pointed out that they were able to warm up and have a sleep there when taking a break during the demonstrations.

He urged special forces "to by no means attack and unleash another bloody Saturday or another bloody Sunday."

Tyahnybok called on the military and law enforcement to take the side of the protesters in their drive for the removal of President Viktor Yanukovych and his government.
