Two policemen wounded by robbers in downtown Moscow
MOSCOW. Dec 13 (Interfax) - Robbers shot two police officers who responded to an assault and robbery report from building 1, 25, Komsomolsky Avenue in Moscow, the Russian Investigative Committee's Moscow department spokesman Sergei Stukalov told Interfax on Friday.
"Three policemen arrived at the crime scene; the door was unlocked and they went inside. The suspects opened gunfire. The police used service-issue weapons to return fire and deterred the attack, yet two officers were injured," Stukalov said.
Three of the four assailants were wounded, one of them lethally. "Reportedly, the man was shot dead by his accomplices," Stukalov said.
A criminal case was opened on the counts of an attempt upon the life of police officers, assault and robbery, and illegal possession of a weapon.
A source from the press service of the Russian Interior Ministry's Moscow department identified one suspect as a resident of the Moscow region. His three accomplices came to Russia from Armenia, Tajikistan and Georgia.
A source from the Moscow police force told Interfax that one of the detainees was Rezo Bukhnikashvili aka Petso, a Georgian citizen and a crime lord.
He was the only one who did not resist the police, the source added.
