Ex-Tbilisi mayor accused of spending some $30 mln on Saakashvili party's parliamentary campaign
TBILISI. Dec 18 (Interfax) - The Chief Prosecutor's Office accuses Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugulava of misappropriating 48 million lari (about $30 million) from the city budget.
The Chief Prosecutor's Office said in a statement on Wednesday that Ugulava and five of his deputies are suspected of spending 48 million lari from the Tbilisi Development Fund to finance the former ruling party United National Movement's parliamentary campaign in 2012.
Ugulava, who is also a leader of the United National Movement, was questioned at the Chief Prosecutor's Office on Wednesday.
Speaking to dozens of his supporters near the Prosecutor General's Office building before the questioning, Ugulava said he did not know whether he would freely walk out of the building but vowed that, "in any case, our struggle will be continued."
"A country based on the feeling of revenge will not exist long. We were often accused of building a single-party system, but now Georgia has turned into a country of one man, Bidzina Ivanishvili," Ugulava said.
