ICBM disposal plant to be launched in Moscow region in 2014

KRASNOARMEISK, Moscow region. Dec 20 (Interfax-AVN) - The disposal of Topol-M solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missiles with expired service lives will begin on the premises of the Geodesy Research Institute in the Moscow region in 2014, Institute Director Alexander Vagin told Interfax-AVN on Thursday.

"We are testing the technological process of the disposal of engines of Topol-M solid-fuel missiles on a special bench, and the plant will begin operations in 2014," he said.

The bench was under construction for four years in cooperation with the Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos).

"It may dispose other types of engines from Iskander and Tochka U tactical missiles," the director said.

Up to 150 missiles of various types may be scrapped each year, he added.

A conference dedicated to the industrial and environmental security of the ammunition industry was held in Krasnoarmeisk on Thursday. First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Industry, First Vice-President of the Russian Union of Machine Builders Vladimir Gutenev attended the conference.
