Pussy Riot member Alyokhina leaves penitentiary

NIZHNY NOVGOROD. Dec 23 (Interfax) - A member of Pussy Riot punk group, Maria Alyokhina, on Monday morning left penitentiary #2 in Nizhny Novgorod where she was serving her sentence, Pyotr Verzilov, the husband of another Pussy Riot member, told Interfax.

"At about 9:10 a.m. Maria left the penitentiary. With her lawyer Pyotr Zaikin she is now driving to the railway station from which she will travel to Moscow by train," Verzilov said.

The amnesty declared by the State Duma on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Russian constitution applies to Alyokhina who was sentenced to two years for participation in a scandal-making punk performance in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
