Moscow demo results in 28 arrests - police

MOSCOW. Dec 31 (Interfax) - Police arrested 28 activists for trying to hold one of regular demonstrations in central Moscow on Tuesday evening in defense of Article 31 of the Russian Constitution, which proclaims freedom of assembly, the city police authority said.

The detainees included writer Eduard Limonov, a high-profile opposition leader.

"Despite repeated warnings that the event had not been sanctioned, 28 people made an attempt to go ahead with the unauthorized action and were taken to police stations for possible prosecution under the law," a police authority spokesman told Interfax.

Before the arrests, women police officers urged the demonstrators through loudspeakers to disperse and celebrate the onset of the new year at home. However, the demonstrators decided to stay.
