Ash plume from Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka reaches altitude of 5 km
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY. Jan 8 (Interfax) - There was an eruption of ash from Shiveluch volcano on Wednesday, the press service of the Emergency Situations' Ministry department for Kamchatka territory reports quoting satellite data of KVERT group.
"The ash plume rose to about 5 kilometers above sea level. Given the direction of the wind the ash cloud spread to the north and northwest of the volcano bypassing populated areas. No ash falls were registered in towns and villages of Ust-Kamchatka municipal district," the report says.
There is no threat to the population. No social tension has been recorded, the press service said.
All travel agencies have been notified about the threat to tourists and they have been strongly advised against sending tourist groups along routes running near the volcano.
The orange aviation code has been assigned to the volcano.
