Food safety watchdog finds benzopyrene in sprats from Latvia

MOSCOW. Jan 13 (Interfax) - Russia's Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Oversight Service (Rosselkhoznadzor) has detected more than permissible amounts of the highly carcinogenic compound benzopyrene in sprats processed by several Latvian enterprises during inspections at the country's border.

Rosselkhoznadzor said even small concentrations of benzopyrene pose a threat to human health, as it accumulates in the body.

Rosselkhoznadzor has informed the territorial divisions of the Federal Service for Health and Consumer Rights (Rospotrebnadzor) for Moscow and Moscow Region to be on the lookout so that this product is not offered for sale. The watchdog will be maintaining increased laboratory scrutiny over deliveries of this product.

Lab testing has found benzopyrene in product from N A 007308, SIA Randa Klavas, Rojas pagasts, Rojas novads.
