Kyiv protesters hurling Molotov cocktails at police - ministry
KYIV. Jan 20 (Interfax) - "Mass riots are continuing" on Kyiv's Grushevsky Street, with groups of pro-European Union protesters taking turns in attacking police, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.
Some of the protesters are resting in tents on Independence Square or in the Trade Unions House while others are assaulting police, the ministry said in a statement.
"The numbers of offenders have reached about 500, and some of them are members of the so-called self-defense of Euromaidan [nickname for the movement demanding closer ties with the EU]. They hurl paving stones and bottles with flammable liquid at the police, shoot fireworks at them and use slingshots to throw metal bolts and rocks at them," the ministry said.
It said the police were trying to stop protesters from breaking through to the parliament building.
