Tbilisi discontent with Abkhazian plans to beef up security
TBILISI. Jan 21 (Interfax) - The Georgian Foreign Ministry has expressed concern about the intentions of Abkhazia to beef up border security in connection with the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
A resolution of the Abkhazian government reshaped the border zone in the Gagra district bordering on the Adler district of Russia's Krasnodar territory for the period from January 20 through March 21.
The Abkhazian government press service told Interfax earlier, "The border zone has been temporality moved eleven kilometers into the Abkhazian territory from the state border with the Russian Federation, i.e. from the River of Psou to the town of Bagrpish."
"The illegal action moved the Russian-Georgian state border eleven kilometers inside Georgian territory," the Georgian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.
"The creation of a border zone on the sovereign territory of Georgia without consent from the Georgian government is another encroachment upon the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia and a gross violation by Russia of its international commitments, the fundamental principles of international laws and the ceasefire agreement," it said.
