Russian embassy seeking official info on Russian journalist's detention in Kyiv

KYIV. Jan 23 (Interfax) - The Russian Embassy to Ukraine has forwarded inquiries to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry and Foreign Ministry regarding media reports on the detention of Russian journalist Andrei Kiselyov by police in Kyiv, the embassy told Interfax.

"The consulate department hasn't received official information on his detention," an embassy employee said.

Media reported on Thursday that Kiselyov, a journalist from the Russian web publication Lenta.ru, was detained in Kyiv, where clashes between opposition activists and security forces have continued for several days.

Kiselyov was detained by members of the Berkut special task force while he was covering the ongoing events in Kyiv on the morning of January 23, Lenta.ru reported.

Mikhail Fedotov, the chairman of the presidential Human Rights Council, demanded earlier that the Ukrainian authorities free Kiselyov.
