Syrian govt delegation could leave Geneva in absence of substantive talks
DUBAI. Jan 24 (Interfax) - The Syrian delegation could leave Geneva if no substantive talks with the opposition start before Saturday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Mualem said, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), which cited a United Nations source.
Al-Mualem said this to United Nations and Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhadr Brahimi, the agency said.
Currently, the opposition does not appear to be serious, the Syrian minister told Brahimi.
The delegation from Damascus has arrived to Geneva to defend Syria and its people, he added.
At the Geneva talks the Syrian governmental delegation is set to seek a political resolution to the conflict, Syrian Information Minister Umran al-Za'bi said earlier.
"We insist on the success of political paths and do not intend to compound it. President Bashar al-Assad gave us clear instructions to work on the success of this path," he told reporters.
