Nuclear sub assists in rescue of three fishermen in Barents Sea

SEVEROMORSK. Jan 27 (Interfax-AVN) - A ready group of an anti-sabotage unit stationed in the Vidyayevo district has rescued three fishermen in the Motovsky Gulf of the Barents Sea, North Fleet spokesman Capt. 1st Rank Vadim Serga told Interfax-AVN on Monday.

"Servicemen of a North Fleet radio-technical observation post deployed on the Island of Kuvshin in the Motovsky Gulf detected the distress signal at 11:30 a.m. on January 25. Information about a small fishing boat, which ran aground off Chyornaya Pakha Cape and got a hole in its hull, was immediately transferred to the North Fleet command post and a duty officer of the Emergency Situations Ministry. The Nizhny Novgorod nuclear submarine, which was performing a training mission in the Motovsky Gulf, was sent to the location of the boat in distress," Serga said.

The submariners made sure with visual contact that the fishermen had safely reached the shore. A decision was made to transport them by hovercraft to a nearby populated locality.
