Two sets of S-400 air defense systems to be deployed in Russia's Western Military District
MOSCOW. Jan 28 (Interfax-AVN) - Two sets of the S-400 'Triumph' missile air defense system will be deployed for the first time in the Leningrad region as part of the Western Military District's air defense system in 2014, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
"These systems will be deployed in the Leningrad region and will join the air defense system of Russia's northwestern area," it said.
The servicemen of the command of the Air Force and Air Defense Forces of the Western Military District will undergo planned re-training to operate the new systems in the near future, the district's headquarters said.
The S-400 'Triumph' air defense system developed and manufactured by the Almaz-Antei air defense company is a new-generation long-range and medium-range system designed to intercept all types of modern and prospective aerial targets, including jamming aircraft, airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft, reconnaissance aircraft, strategic and tactical aircraft, tactical and tactical-strategic ballistic missiles, medium-range ballistic missiles, hypersonic targets, and other modern and projected airborne attack weapons. Each system is capable of intercepting up to 36 targets with up to 72 missiles simultaneously at a distance of up to 400 kilometers.
