Defense Ministry would like to see more women in army
NOVOSIBIRSK. Jan 31 (Interfax-AVN) - There should be more women in the army and many women want to be in the military, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Nikolai Pankov said.
During a meeting with representatives of Siberian universities in Novosibirsk on Friday, Pankov said Russia has its own tradition for staffing the army and it is different from the approaches adopted in many foreign armies. "I personally believe that there should be more women in the Armed Forces, in the positions of officers, generals, sergeants, sergeant-majors, and privates," he said, reiterating that being in the military should be women's choice.
It was said in the meeting that 200 young women entered Russia's military education establishments and there are plans to admit over 260 women there in 2014.
"We have experience of admitting [women] to the Ryazan Command Higher Landing Force School. We do that. And the competition is crazy! It shows that the military profession is popular among women, and that can't be ignored," he said.
