Compromise on situation in Ukraine can be reached in parliament - Deputy Parliament Speaker Kaletnik
KYIV. Feb 3 (Interfax) - Ukrainian Deputy Parliament Speaker Ihor Kaletnik believes the Ukrainian parliament should become the main platform that will help relieve the tensions in society.
"I believe the Ukrainian parliament should become the main platform for reaching a compromise and relieving the tensions in society," he said at an international roundtable meeting entitled Democratic Process and the Threat of Radicalization in Ukraine held in Kyiv on Monday.
Kaletnik said the threats of political radicalization are now faced by many countries, including Ukraine. He believes that "it cannot be said that the situation in the Ukrainian parliament in connection with the events taking place in the streets of Kyiv and other cities is simple."
However, he believes that most parliamentarians have the strength to "make balanced decisions" and "make decisions based on the interests of the state and our people, instead of populist decisions," he said.
Kaletnik recalled that parliamentarians have made their contribution to ensuring historical justice. Specifically, legislation toughening liability for denying or justifying crimes of fascism and desecration of monuments to those who fought against Nazism in WWII was passed, he said.
Kaletnik believes the efforts made by politicians in this sphere are not enough and "there is a need for support from the public, including from the international community."
